Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: How do I become a Freestyle Wrestler?

A1: Participation in Freestyle Wrestling in the UK is via wrestling clubs where you will receive training from BWA registered coaches. A systematic and disciplined approach to the sport is essential if you are to have any hope of progressing successfully. It is important that you join a registered club because it will be properly insured to cover matters of health and safety.

Q2: Where do I find a Freestyle Wrestling Club?

A2: Download a the list of registered clubs for the current year by clicking here. There are a limited number of clubs compared to similar sports, however, should sufficient people be interested in starting the sport in your area then please discuss this with BWA Administration. There is an email link is at the bottom of the left hand column.

Q3: How old does one have to be to start wrestling?

A3: There are wrestlers as young as seven years. It is advised that parents / guardians discuss with club coaches the suitability of children regardless of age. Starting the sport as early as is reasonable leads to greater competence in the teen years, provided the child maintains regular practice. Boys and girls starting in their early teens can reach a good level of competence given the right type and level of coaching.

Q4: Can adults learn to wrestle?

A4: Yes! The sport and its associated training provides a good form of physical exercise at whatever age within reason. Potential participants must take the usual health precautions before starting a new sport, seeking medical advice if appropriate and through discussion with a club coach. Be aware that for health & safety reasons some clubs may be unable to cater for adult wrestlers.

Q5: Do I have to join the British Wrestling Association in order learn Freestyle Wrestling?

A5: Not necessarily so! You can join a club and pay whatever membership fees they levy and practice the sport at that level. In order to progress you will need experience of wrestling at competitions and at that time you will need Individual BWA Membership in order to participate. Click here to download the current Individual Membership Application form with rates current to the end of the calendar year.

Q6: What wrestling attire do I need?

A6: Dress code at club practice sessions is a matter for individual coaches. Wrestlers participating in competitions must wear proper wrestling attire which basically consists of a wrestling singlet, appropriate support and wrestling shoes. Singlets, shoes and other attire may be purchased from via the Association's shop. Some clubs have their own branded wrestling attire and may expect it to be worn at competitions.
