Frequently Asked Questions


British Wrestling regularly receives questions regarding the insurance cover provided to members, coaches and clubs. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions with answers. 

What wrestling disciplines am I covered to participate in? 

British Wrestling insurance covers all forms of wrestling governed by United World Wrestling: 

  • Freestyle Wrestling 
  • Greco-Roman Wrestling 
  • Beach Wrestling 
  • Grappling (UWW rules only) 
  • UWW Associated styles by agreement with British Wrestling 

In addition, British Wrestling insurance recognises the following disciplines: 

  • Westmoreland and Cumberland Wrestling 
  • Cornish Wrestling 
  • Scottish Backhold Wrestling 
  • Catch as Catch Can Wrestling 

All cover is subject to compliance with British Wrestling and where applicable United World Wrestling rules and regulations.  

 

Am I covered to wrestle abroad? 

Full British Wrestling members are covered for Public Liability. This means that if you cause accidental bodily injury to someone during the course of your official Wrestling activity, the public liability is there to pay for associated costs and damages. In addition Full British Wrestling members are covered by Personal Accident insurance in the event that you injure yourself during British Wrestling recognised activity. Personal Accident insurance provides a set financial payment in the event of an accidental injury applicable during a British Wrestling recognised activity.

Members are not covered for travel unless travelling on a British Wrestling organised trip. If you are travelling as a club or individually you should secure your own travel insurance.  

 

Does the policy cover anyone who is not a resident of England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland? 

Insurance coverage is only available to members who have a permanent UK address. Such members are covered for their liabilities in terms of recognised activities in both the UK and overseas, provided that any overseas trip is officially recognised/ authorised by British Wrestling.  

Please note cover does not apply for claims brought in a court of law in the USA/Canada. Any member permanently living abroad is not covered. 

Am I covered for personal injury? 

Full British Wrestling members are covered by Personal Accident insurance this means that means that in the event of an accidental injury, as long as it happened during recognised wrestling activity, you will be covered. This cover provides a financial payment based on the injury – there is a list of injuries covered, with a fixed pay-out for each one.

This cover does not extend to other membership categories.  

 

Am I covered to coach in schools? (paid and voluntary) 

As a licensed British Wrestling coach, you are protected by British Wrestling’s Professional Indemnity insurance policy. Professional Indemnity insurance provides cover for negligent acts, errors or omissions in respect of coaching, instruction and advice during the delivery of British Wrestling recognised activity. 

British Wrestling coaches are insured to coach outside of British Wrestling club environments such as schools only in the following circumstances: 

  • You are coaching in line with your qualifications only 
  • Turnover generated must not exceed £10,000 per annum 
  • You must not have employees/volunteers working for you 

If you are unable to comply with any of the above, separate insurance will be required. 

 

Am I covered to coach in a commercial gym? 

As a licensed British Wrestling coach, you are protected by British Wrestling’s Professional Indemnity insurance policy. Can I run taster sessions and come and try activities? 

We recognise that clubs may want to run activities designed to raise the profile of wrestling and recruit new members. In such circumstances, the activities are covered subject to being delivered by a licensed coach. For indemnity to apply it is essential that the club records their name, address and dates of attendance. These details must be retained as they may be called upon in the event of a claim.

The Starter membership is designed specifically for newcomers to a club. This free 35-day membership provides public liability cover to train at the nominated club. After 35 days, the member must become a Standard or Full member to continue to participate.  

 

Am I covered to host a competition? 

Affiliated clubs are covered by British Wrestling insurance to host competitions this includes Public Liability, Professional Indemnity and Employers Liability. Affiliated clubs are insured only in the following conditions: 

  • The competition is registered with British Wrestling and approved by the Sport Technical Committee 
  • The competition complies with British Wrestling rules and regulations including all entrants holding a valid membership, only licensed coaches in the corner and only licensed referees officiating 
  • All staff and volunteers hold as a minimum a Supporter membership 

 

Is my club facility covered? 

British Wrestling insurance covers Affiliated wrestling club activity but does not extend to club facilities. Those clubs leasing or owning their own facilities should hold their own building and contents insurance.
