The British Wrestling Beach Wrestling Championships will make history when they come to Cleethorpes Beach Front for the first-ever UK beach wrestling competition, marking an exciting new chapter for the sport of wrestling in Britain.
Hosted in a vibrant, open-air coastal setting, this landmark event will introduce athletes and spectators to Beach Wrestling, one of the fastest-growing disciplines governed by United World Wrestling (UWW) – the international federation for the sport of wrestling.
This championship represents a significant milestone, as it is the first officially sanctioned beach wrestling competition hosted in the United Kingdom. British Wrestling is proud to be developing this exciting format, bringing elite competition directly to the beach and making the sport more accessible, dynamic, and spectator‑friendly.
Beach Wrestling is a standing-only style, contested in a seven‑metre sand circle, with fast-paced bouts decided by throws, takedowns, and boundary control. Matches are typically decided either by a clear points margin or when an athlete scores three points, ensuring high intensity and continuous action.
International Pathway and Team GB Selection
Crucially, the British Wrestling Beach Wrestling Championships will contribute toward selection for future Great Britain (GBR) Beach Wrestling teams. Athletes competing in Cleethorpes will be assessed as part of British Wrestling’s longer-term pathway for international representation at major UWW events, including:
-
Beach Wrestling World Series
-
World Beach Wrestling Championships
-
Continental and multi‑sport events, such as the ANOC World Beach Games and future Youth Olympic programmes.
The UWW Beach Wrestling World Series operates as a global circuit, held annually across multiple international locations, with athletes earning ranking points toward world championship titles. By establishing a domestic championship, British Wrestling is creating a clear route from UK competition to world‑level sand wrestling.
Beach Wrestling has grown rapidly since gaining formal recognition from UWW in the early 2000s, with participation from over 40 nations worldwide and regular international championships for seniors, juniors, and youth athletes. The discipline is designed to be inclusive, easy to understand for spectators, and ideally suited to coastal communities and summer events.
Partnership and Community Support
British Wrestling is extremely grateful to Active Humber for their vital support and commitment in helping bring this historic event to life. Their expertise and dedication have played a key role in developing the first UK beach wrestling competition and ensuring it is delivered to the highest standard.
We would also like to sincerely thank Cleethorpes Leisure Centre for their cooperation and logistical support, which has been instrumental in enabling this championship to take place alongside one of the UK’s most iconic beach fronts.
The British Wrestling Beach Wrestling Championships are more than just a tournament—they represent:
-
A new competitive pathway for British wrestlers
-
A spectator‑friendly summer sport
-
A foundation for future GBR teams on the international stage
With elite athletes, a festival atmosphere, and the backdrop of Cleethorpes Beach, this event promises to be a landmark moment for wrestling in Britain.
