Board confirms rule for cornering

30/04/2015

With 35 UKCC Level 1 Coaches and 46 UKCC Level 2 Coaches qualified across the UK (link) it now becomes possible to set standards for cornering at competitions.

At its March 2015 meeting (link,) the Board confirmed the approach of cornering by coaches who have completed the UKCC qualification.

An extract from the Board minutes reads as follows:-
Coaches in corner at competitions.

  • After discussion it was agreed that only coaches with an ID card would be allowed in the corner. These will be:-
    • Honorary BWA Coach
    • UKCC Level 2 Coach (Completed the course)
    • UKCC Level 1 Coach (Completed the course). It is the BWA’s aim to move towards a Level 2 coach sitting in the corner during the match with UKCC Level 1 assisting at the interval, so the position of the Level 1 coach will be reviewed in 12 months’ time
    • Coach accompanying team of athletes from abroad
  • It was agreed that a coach with a Level 2 ID card from each of the 6 Nations & Regions would be nominated at all competitions to cover for clubs or athletes from their Nation or Region that has no current qualified UKCC coach. (Not discussed, but logistically the club/athlete should contact their Nation/Region to inform them that they intend to compete without a Coach)

There remain just a few clubs without an ID-badged coach that are entering athletes into the forthcoming Scottish Open and it is suggested that they seek the agreement of a UKCC-qualified coach to help out, in advance, to do their cornering for them at this competition and make provision for future competitions until such time as the club has the requisite UKCC L1 and L2 certified coaches.

UKCC stands for the UK Coaching Certificate Level 1 and Level 2 Qualifications endorsed by 1st4sport. All UKCC certified coaches are holders of First-Aid, Safeguarding Children and Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks which must be valid and updated regularly.

Bursaries towards the cost of the UKCC courses are often available on a local basis from County Sports Partnerships and Home Nation Sports Councils.
