On the 4th March, Celina and Sahara held our first Female-Only Open Mat in Birmingham as a part of the Birmingham 2022 Legacy Project. The event was specifically designed for females only, giving them a rare opportunity to experience wrestling from all walks of life and connect with one another in a safe and inclusive space. It was a culmination of the discussions had at our previous female-only event in December, where the barriers women face when it comes to participation in the sport of wrestling were highlighted.
From novice participants to Olympic athletes, women from all backgrounds and skill levels came together to collaborate and work towards a common goal. It was a day of fun and engagement, where inspiring stories about the difficulties these women faced and how they overcame them were shared. In a world where women are still fighting for equal representation and opportunities in various fields, it was truly inspiring to witness a group of powerful women coming together to break barriers and empower each other.
Our next open mat event will be hosted at the British Wrestling Academy in Manchester. We’re hoping to see even more women come together to build bridges and break down barriers. We’re encouraging everyone to spread the word and invite their female athletes, coaches, and anyone else who would be interested in attending.
Our goal is to continue supporting women who would love to participate in the sport but don’t know where to start. We want to create a space where existing female athletes can connect with others from around the country and beyond. Together, we can build a strong and supportive community of female wrestlers that will inspire future generations of women to pursue their dreams, no matter what obstacles they may face.
We’d like to thank everyone who supported us in this open mat event, and we hope you will continue to support us in this venture!
