British Wrestling is thrilled to announce a significant funding boost from UK Sport, receiving £406,000 over the next four years leading into the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, equivalent to a 47% increase on the Paris cycle.
British Wrestling is one of eleven Olympic and Paralympic sports to be awarded a ‘Development Funding’ investment. Development Funding is designed to support the long-term medal potential of sports like wrestling. This investment highlights UK Sport’s confidence in British Wrestling’s potential to reach new heights.
This exciting news comes with a unique opportunity and condition of the award: British Wrestling will be working closely with the world-class programme at British Judo, learning and developing alongside their system to further enhance our own performance pathways.
“We are incredibly grateful to UK Sport for this investment and the belief they have shown in our vision,” said Craig Anthony, CEO of British Wrestling. “This funding is crucial for supporting our athletes and coaches in their pursuit of Olympic qualification and medals.
We are eager to continue to collaborate with British Judo and learn from their expertise as we work towards our shared ambition of representing Great Britain on the Olympic stage.”
Sally Munday, CEO of UK Sport, said: “It’s thanks to the unwavering support of the UK Government and our wonderful National Lottery players that we are able to announce this historic investment today, towards continuing to create the greatest decade of extraordinary sporting moments.
The past few years have been tough for our sports with the delayed Tokyo Games and shortened Paris cycle, and we know finances remain under extreme pressure. We have looked to relieve some of this pressure through our investment today, however we know we must continue to innovate and collaborate, together, to grow a thriving sporting system that’s fit for the future.
Huge credit to the leaders in our sports for all the hard work they’ve done, with us, over the past 18 months to put us in this brilliant position to be able to say we are ready to win well in the LA cycle and beyond.”
British Wrestling is committed to building on recent successes and creating a sustainable future for the sport. This funding will be instrumental in achieving our goals and inspiring the next generation of wrestlers to pursue their Olympic dreams.
