In a landmark development for British Wrestling, a new era of governance and accountability is set to dawn with the unveiling of an updated Code of Conduct and Disciplinary Code. Slated to be implemented from January 1, 2024, this transformative initiative comes on the heels of the appointment of Independent Judicial Chair Sir Gary Hickinbottom, promising a strengthened commitment to integrity and sportsmanship within the sport.
The revamped Disciplinary Code integrates the existing Competition Disciplinary Policy and UK Sports Sport Integrity service into a singular, comprehensive document. This strategic consolidation aims to provide a clear and consistent framework for addressing disciplinary matters, fostering a more cohesive and accountable British Wrestling community.
Sir Gary Hickinbottom, a former Court of Appeal Judge experienced in sport discipline and dispute resolution, emphasised the significance of this milestone, stating,
“The creation of this updated code of conduct and disciplinary code is a pivotal step towards ensuring that British Wrestling operates with the utmost integrity and upholds the core values that are central to the sport. This unified document will serve as a robust framework to address disciplinary issues and promote a culture of respect and sportsmanship.”
Chair Steven Esom echoed these sentiments, highlighting the commitment to a fair and transparent process.
“The British Wrestling community is dedicated to fostering an environment where everyone, regardless of their role, feels safe, respected, and valued. This new code of conduct and disciplinary code is a testament to our unwavering commitment to the principles of fairness and accountability.”
The updated Code of Conduct introduces specific sections tailored to individuals with different roles within the sport, including coaches, athletes, officials, parents, and spectators. This tailored approach ensures that everyone involved in British Wrestling is not only aware of their responsibilities but is also equipped with the knowledge of the standards expected of them.
CEO Craig Anthony emphasized the importance of inclusivity within the code.
“By providing specific guidelines for different stakeholders, we are reinforcing our commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive community within British Wrestling. This approach not only sets clear expectations but also empowers individuals to contribute positively to the sport.”
British Wrestling eagerly anticipates the implementation of the new code of conduct and disciplinary code in the coming year, both documents will be available at all times on the Policies page of the British Wrestling website. With Sir Gary Hickinbottom at the helm, the sport is poised to enter a new chapter marked by accountability, transparency, and a steadfast commitment to the principles of fair play. As the countdown to 2024 begins, British Wrestling looks ahead to a future where every participant, from athletes to spectators, plays a vital role in upholding the integrity of this beloved sport.
