Bury Defence Academy

Care and Share (Free Meals for the Needy Project)

Bury Defence Academy is a wrestling club who are working towards becoming affiliated to British Wrestling. The Academy has been closed due to the Covid-19 outbreak since 15th March.

However, their team of volunteers, who would otherwise be running the Wrestling and Martial Arts Club, have been busy using the time to roll out a project to support needy residents in their town with free, home-delivered evening meals. They began this project during the Islamic month of Ramadan and are currently supporting 40 residents daily including;

  • Those who are self-isolating
  • Those who have recently lost employment
  • Vulnerable groups such as refugees, asylum seekers and those with substantial health problems.
  • We are also providing 5 meals per day to a local homeless charity.

The club will, in the near future be looking at continuing their support for the neediest in some form with a sustainable project that functions alongside the Defence Academy. They intend to encourage young service users from the Wrestling and Martial Arts classes to take part in volunteering to support any future project.
