Chris is Course Leader for the MSc in Strength & Conditioning at the University of Central Lancashire, having lectured there since 2003, and has 20 years coaching and consultancy experience at regional, national and international level in Cycling, Triathlon, Football, Weightlifting, Boxing, and Karate. A former National level competitive cyclist, Chris is an interdisciplinary sports scientist and S&C Coach with a doctorate in sports biomechanics and physiology. He is also an accredited Strength and Conditioning coach with UKSCA, NSCA and BWL, and has worked as a consultant sports scientist for the highly successful Rapha Condor cycling team and Team Sports Cover. Chris was previously Head of Sports Science at Blackpool and Burnley Football Clubs and consultant coach at Preston North End and Bury Football Clubs
Aside from a long-standing interest in how to increase force production Chris’ more recent areas of interest are the psychobiological aspects of: 1) Development of grit, resilience, and mental toughness and their effects on the ability to cope and thrive in sport and extreme environments. 2) The importance and benefits of entering and exploring arenas of fear, the unknown, the new, and the uncomfortable, and how the coach and leader can set-up appropriate environments for this to take place
Outside of his focus on lifting new and existing S&C coaches to the next level of their coaching career on the MSc in Strength and Conditioning, Chris likes to spend his time creating and exploring challenging environments and enjoys cycling, hiking and weightlifting
