Shaherah Jordan, the Chair of British Wrestling’s International Relations Committee, embarked on a significant visit to Barbados to foster international collaboration and deliver a key workshop on safeguarding in sports. The visit, initiated by Rollins Alleyne, President of the Barbados Wrestling Association, aimed to enhance the partnership between British Wrestling and Barbados Wrestling, culminating in a series of high-profile meetings and events.
Shaherah’s visit commenced on May 22 with a pivotal meeting with Hon. Minister Charles Griffiths, Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment. The discussion, attended by a local wrestling club coach, a promising athlete, and her parent, centred around establishing a formal relationship between the two federations. The proposed initiatives included a Community Coaches Programme focusing on coach development and talent identification at the grassroots level, with an aim to develop 4-6 coaches over a four-year period. Additionally, the need for officials to accompany national teams to international competitions was highlighted. The possibility of sending athletes and coaches on study tours to British Wrestling’s Academy and training a trainer for safeguarding or coaching were also discussed. Confirmation from the Minister is awaited to proceed with the proposal.

On May 23, Shaherah appeared on the popular morning show, “Mornin’ Barbados” to discuss the importance of safeguarding in sport and to promote the afternoon workshop. Her segment, fittingly scheduled among themes related to the protection and well-being of children, underscored the vital message of safeguarding athletes. Watch it now on YouTube.
Later that day, Shaherah conducted a “Safeguarding: Policy and Practice” workshop at the Barbados Olympic Association. The event, introduced by Vaneisha Cadogan, Director of the National Olympic Academy, Neil Murrel, Director of Sports for the National Sports Council, and Rollins Alleyne, attracted around 25 attendees, including athletes, parents, coaches, and national federations. The workshop, aimed at a basic level, sparked engaging questions and ideas, contributing to the ongoing dialogue on safeguarding in sports.

On May 24, Shaherah met with representatives from the Barbados Tourism and Marketing Inc (BTMI) to discuss the potential for beach wrestling in the country. The BTMI, having recently formed a Sports Tourism Committee, showed keen interest in the potential of beach wrestling, seeking further insights to support this initiative.
Finally, a meeting with Erskine Simmons, Secretary General of the Barbados Olympic Association and PanAm Sports Board member, and Vaneisha Cadogan, provided a platform to solidify the relationship between the British Wrestling Association and the Barbados Olympic Association. The meeting concluded with a tour of the Barbados Olympic Museum, symbolizing the strengthening bond between the two organisations.
Shaherah Jordan’s visit to Barbados marked a significant step towards international cooperation in wrestling, with promising discussions and initiatives that could shape the future of the sport in both nations. As the British and Barbadian wrestling communities await confirmation from the respective authorities, the groundwork has been laid for a fruitful partnership aimed at promoting and safeguarding the sport.
