British Wrestling has been working with Rocca Creative to develop a new competition system to support our competitions moving forward. We have brought together our key volunteers to help create this system in line with the latest wrestling technical knowledge. We started work on this in March 2020, partway through the pandemic after securing funds to create the system from Sport England. Once all the necessary securities and paperwork were in place, such as a ‘development critical pathway’, ‘project risk assessment’ and various other documents, we began work.

Within phase 1 we had an overall skeleton structure created to begin the more specific work to accompany it. This covered mapping out a typical competition from the initial creation of competition, type of competition, booking, weigh-in, pairing, running the event, live streaming, athlete profiles, scoreboard to the finishing score being streamed online. The first phase included the creation of the referee’s bout sheets. After input from our Lead Technical Official, Richard, and Membership Secretary, Trevor Hoskins, we finalised the bout sheet. Most areas would look familiar however the new addition to this has been a history of the points per athlete.

As we had Richard and Trevor working on the bout sheets, the natural process was to progress to the scoreboard as the two are closely linked. The bout sheets will directly link to the scoreboard with a live update which will also feed to the online live feed. Similarly, with the bout sheet, we included the history of the awarded points to help show how the match progresses for the spectators. Refer to COMP2 for a draft of the scoreboard.
Working with a small group of individuals to allow for the creation of a basic algorithm, we worked with one of our pairing volunteers to get the basics. This has allowed us to create a system to be put to the test by a small group of tests to be sure we can work out any bugs that might appear. This is the current phase we’re working on and will expand on in the next issue of this web blog.
We have been working with our Lead Technical Official and Competition Lead to help structure and direct the work on schedules and upcoming matches. We aim to be completely paper-free in this area. This will help organise competitions without having crowds of coaches, athletes and parents pushing to see when the next bouts are. For an example of what the system might look like, look to above images COMP3 for reference.

We are also developing a profile area for all the competitive members who will be accessing competitions. This area will show your upcoming event, previous weigh-ins, your achievements and more.
