2013 Veteran World Championships
1 Oct 2013
Unfunded team of British Wrestling athletes make their own way out to the Veteran World Championships in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Bob McLucas, Stuart McKay and Hossein Azgharyzadegan have made the journey and are up against athletes from the major wrestling countries. Masoud Honarfar is the Team Leader/Coach of this year’s team.
Bob McLucas, from Musselburgh, East Lothian, Scotland, competed on 1st October 2013 in the 76kg Freestyle event. Bob wrestled in Division “E” (56-60years) category. After the benefit of a bye in the first round, Bob went on to pin Turkey in the first period of the quarter finals. Bob then went on to pin USA in the first period of the semi-finals. Bob was then guaranteed a Gold or Silver medal in the final against Russia. However, the Russian proved too good and Bob had to settle for Silver with a score of 7:0.
With his return to the mat after dealing with cancer, Bob demonstrated his return to form by adding this Silver to his previous Veteran World Championships medal haul of Silver and Bronze.
Next up, Stuart McKay in the 76kg Division “C” (46-50years) category. With a bye in the first round, Stuart was plunged straight into the semi-finals against Greece who had earlier defeated Russia. However, Greece stormed to their second victory on their way to the final beating Stuart 7:0. Stuart still had a chance for Bronze in the repechage but was first up against Russia and lost the bout 7:2.
Hossein Azgharyzadegan came 5th in his category missing out on the 69kg Bronze he secured at last year’s Veteran World Championships, Hungary in the Veteran (Division “D” 51 – 55 years) category.
