Yana Rattigan
represented GBR in the 48kg category at the 2013 Female Wrestling World Championships, in Budapest, Hungary.
With 29 entrants, all of high class, there was no easy draw available.
There is no seeding in Wrestling, the draw being random.
In her first bout, Yana beat Angela Dorogan 6:2, followed by a pin in the second round. Dorogan, came 13th in last year’s World Championships and 12th in this year’s European Championships. However, in those championships Dorogan was wrestling at the higher weight category of 51kg. In September last year Dorogan achieved a Silver in prestgious Ukrainian Golden Grand Prix.
Next up Yana was against Anna Lukasiak, whom she met previously at the March 2013 Europeans in Georgia. That time she beat Lukasiak 2:1 4:4, gaining silver against Lukasiak’s 5th place. However, on this occasion Yana was defeated 4-11.
Attention focussed on Lukasiak’s progress. A place in the final for her would mean that Yana could access the repechage with the chance to wrestle for a bronze position.
Lukasiak went on to beat Yong Mi Pak of North Korea but was in turn beaten by Mayelis Caripa Castillo of Venezuela. Caripa Castillo is an impressive wrestler, 10th in London 2012.
Venezuela’s most-decorated wrestler Caripa Castillo made history, when she earned her country’s first-ever silver medal in senior-level women’s wrestling. Castillo used an impressive high-amplitude double leg to blast her way through the quarterfinal and semifinal competition.
Eri Tosaka of Japan, eager to make up for her second-place finish a year ago, struck for a single-leg takedown off the whistle and then added a quick knee-pick for a four-point lead over Caripa Castillo in the first 20 seconds.
Tosaka, then, secured her first world title by going behind the 33-year-old veteran for the technical fall at 1:44.
In the final rankings Yana finished 11th out of 29 entrants.
