Celtic Cup 2019

The British Wrestling Academy, Salford hosted a tremendous “dual meet”  on Sunday 26 May between a Great Britain team drawn from the Build for Birmingham squad and the Roger Williams University Wrestling Team, Rhode Island, USA (the Hawks).

In addition, some younger athletes put on an exhibition of technical wrestling demonstrating that the future is very bright for GBR.

For the first time in many years, a full team contested all ten UWW weight categories and huge congratulations and thanks are due to each of the coaches and athletes who represented GBR at this high profile event.

GBR won nine of the ten matches plus the additional match and the Celtic Cup now resides back here for the first time in eight years.  The event was well organised by Barry Pollin, the bouts were entertaining and there was a large crowd there to see. There were also many friends of Wrestling invited, all of whom gained a great insight into the sport.

The Celtic Cup Team Leader Alan Jones said, “Fantastic day with outstanding wrestling showing all that we are serious about Great Britain reaching any target put in front of us.” [Alan Jones Wales – British Wrestling]
