A huge step forward for women’s sport in the UK as British Wrestling hosts its first-ever dedicated Female Squad training camp, perfectly timed to celebrate the International Day of the Girl and featuring Olympic gold medal-winning expertise.

In a massive boost for the future of British Wrestling, we recently hosted our inaugural Female Squad training camp, delivered in partnership with United World Wrestling (UWW) Europe. This landmark event at the British Wrestling Academy wasn’t just a moment to celebrate; it marks a crucial turning point in the expansion of our dedicated female pathway, driving participation and elite performance opportunities for women and girls across the UK.
Crucially, the camp was held in October on the International Day of the Girl, making the occasion even more significant as we celebrated the potential and power of our young female athletes on a global stage.
To ensure our talented female athletes received the very best guidance, the camp featured Olympic gold medal-winning coach Patrick Loes. His presence provided a truly world-class learning experience, inspiring confidence and imparting invaluable technical knowledge to our developing squad.
Crucially, Coach Loes worked closely alongside our brilliant new female coaches, Katie Hawthorn and Oksana Rakhra. This collaboration ensures the high-performance lessons learned at the camp will be integrated into our long-term national training structure, securing a legacy of excellence for the female programme.
The camp successfully brought together 21 dedicated female athletes, creating a highly positive and focused environment for learning, connection, and growth.
Performance Manager, Kieran Malone, who organised the event, noted the infectious enthusiasm of the participants. The sentiment was echoed by Coach Loes, who was full of praise for the group: “This is a promising group with genuine potential for the future,” he stated, reinforcing the positive momentum building within our female programme.
The sessions were a resounding success, receiving an overwhelmingly positive reception from both the athletes and their parents. The feedback was clear: everyone is eager to see these dedicated female camps become a regular feature on the British Wrestling calendar!
British Wrestling is absolutely committed to building on this successful foundation. Expanding the female pathway is a top priority, and the energy, skill, and commitment shown at this camp prove that the future of Olympic wrestling in the UK is bright.
Inspired by the success of our female squad? Whether you’re a beginner or looking to get back on the mat, wrestling is one of the best ways to improve your physical fitness, mental wellbeing, and social skills.
