Becoming a Wrestling Coach

British Wrestling is keen to support any and all individuals who are looking to coach wrestling as their primary sport or as a substitute strength and conditioning element of their training programs.

Below is our coach education pathway which shows how you can become a coach. If you would like any support in becoming a coach please contact us via education@britishwrestling.org

We have streamlined the coach education pathway to simplify the process and limit the time taken to become a coach. Below is the Coaching Pathway with additional information on the duration of the courses.

  • Level 1 Assistant Coach (Wrestling): Course Practical Duration is 1 day (online theory done separately)
  • Level 2 Club Coach (Wrestling): Course Practical Duration is 2 days (online theory done separately)

Female Coaching Bursary

As part of our strategic commitment to grow female wrestling since International Women’s Day 2019 we provide a free place on every coaching course for a female candidate. To apply for a free place please email education@britishwrestling.org.

Costs

Coaching courses are split into online theory modules and practical modules. The total cost for the course is split evenly across these two modules.

Coaches License

Only coaches licensed by British Wrestling are covered by our insurance and clubs and other providers should ensure that your coaches hold an active licence. Coaches can hold a digital copy of their licence in their Google or Apple wallet which should be checked on deployment. If you are in doubt of the validity of a licence please contact British Wrestling via admin@britishwrestling.org.

Our Coach and Officials Licensing Policy covers all the details and a summary of the requirements to becoming a British Wrestling licensed coach are listed below with a few examples of where you can get them.  

Coaching Certification

This can be acquired once you have completed your coaching qualification through British Wrestling. We do recognise some international qualifications so contact us if you hold existing qualifications.

Code of Conduct

All British Wrestling licensed coaches must abide by our code of conduct. This is confirmed by your active membership. You can find a copy of the code of conduct here.

First Aid

This needs to consist of a minimum of 3 hours of learning. This can involve courses such as Emergency First Aid for Work or in Sport. Some providers offer renewal courses if you have done a first aid course in the past. These courses can be found with various providers such as:

Enhanced Criminal Records Check

The criminal records check requires the most time to complete of all the certifications needed for your license. Please allow for 6-8 weeks for this to be completed. To start the process please email British Wrestling at membership@britishwrestling.org with your full name and that you require an enhanced DBS check. BWA charge £18 for a check but other providers’ costs can vary across the UK. If you are in one of the home nations there may be alternative requirements:

  • Scotland: PVG check, this can be done through Scottish Wrestling
  • Wales: Enhanced DBS check. This can be done through British Wrestling
  • Northern Ireland: Enhanced DBS check. This can be done through both Wrestling NI and British Wrestling

Safeguarding Certification

This needs to consist of a minimum of 3 hours of learning. This can involve courses such as the courses hosted by the NSPCC and CSPU. If you have done a safeguarding course in the past, renewal courses are available. These can be found with providers such as:
