Becoming a Wrestling Coach

British Wrestling is keen to support any and all individuals who are looking to coach wrestling as their primary sport or as a substitute strength and conditioning element of their training programs.

Below is our coach education pathway which shows how you can become a coach. If you would like any support in becoming a coach please contact us via education@britishwrestling.org

We have streamlined the coach education pathway to simplify the process and limit the time taken to become a coach. Below is the Coaching Pathway with additional information on the duration of the courses.

  • Level 1 Assistant Coach (Wrestling): Course Practical Duration is 1 day (online theory done separately)
  • Level 2 Certificate in Coaching (Wrestling): Course Practical Duration is 2 days (online theory done separately)

Costs

Coaching courses are split into online theory modules and practical modules. The total cost for the course is split evenly across these two modules.

Coaches License

Becoming a BWA licensed Coach involved a few pre-requisites to support your license. These are listed below with a few examples where you can get them.  

Coaching Certification

This can be acquired once you have completed your coaching qualification through British Wrestling

Enhanced DBS Check/ PVG Check

The Criminal Records check requires the most time to complete of all the certifications needed for your license. Please allow for 6-8 weeks for this to be completed. To start the process please email British Wrestling at membership@britishwrestling.org with your full name and that you require an enhanced DBS check. BWA charge £18 for a check but other providers’ costs can vary across the UK. If you are in one of the home nations there may be alternative requirements:

  • Scotland: PVG check, this can be done through Scottish Wrestling
  • Wales: Enhanced DBS check. This can be done through British Wrestling
  • Northern Ireland: Enhanced DBS check. This can be done through both Wrestling NI and British Wrestling

Safeguarding Certification

This needs to consist of a minimum of 3 hours of learning. This can involve courses such as the courses hosted by the NSPCC and CSPU. The courses cost between £10 – £30. If you have done a safeguarding course in the past, renewal courses are available. These can be found with providers such as:

First Aid

This needs to consist of a minimum of 3 hours of learning. This can involve courses such as Emergency First Aid for Work or in Sport. These courses average cost between £10 onwards. Some providers offer renewal courses if you have done a first aid course in the past. These courses can be found with various providers such as:

Code of Conduct

All BWA licensed coaches must abide by our code of conduct. This can be approved via your membership portal. To do this you must:

  • Log into your profile and click ‘credentials’
  • Add a credential and search ‘code of conduct’
  • Select it and follow the on-screen prompts
  • You do NOT need to upload any paperwork for this
