As the CEO of British Wrestling, I am thrilled to reflect on the remarkable journey of 2023 – a year that exemplified growth, resilience, and triumph for our beloved sport. Throughout the past 12 months, our unwavering commitment to fostering the growth of wrestling has been at the forefront of our endeavours, with a focus on collaboration, governance improvements, and an unrelenting dedication to enhancing the wrestling experience for all.
Empowering the Wrestling Community
In 2023, we stood shoulder to shoulder with clubs and community groups, injecting over £100,000 through projects such as the Together Fund and the Birmingham 22 Legacy Project. This financial support has been a game-changer, ushering the wrestling family to 60 clubs and over 2500 members. Witnessing the strength of our community grow has been truly heartening, and I’m proud of the role British Wrestling played in making this possible.
Investing in Expertise
Recognising that a strong workforce is pivotal for the sport’s advancement, we prioritised the training of coaches and officials with courses across the country throughout the year. This strategic drive saw us qualify 11 new referees and 100 new coaches in 2023 aimed to elevate the capacity within the sport. Investing in our human resources is an investment in the future, and I’m confident that our commitment to nurturing a skilled wrestling community will pay dividends for years to come.
Setting the Standard in Governance
At the core of our activities in 2023 was our commitment to upholding the highest standards of governance. Adhering to the Code of Sport Governance, the Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU) and the UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) Assurance Framework were non-negotiable. The introduction of a new discipline process for competitions, seamlessly integrated into our overarching Discipline Code for wrestling, underscored our commitment to fairness and transparency – a cornerstone for the trust our community places in us.
