British Wrestling is pleased to share new domestic guidance regarding the United World Wrestling (UWW) handshake requirement. Following recent clarifications from the international governing body, we are aware of ongoing discussions within our community regarding how this rule interacts with personal beliefs.
In response, we have sought legal advice to ensure we maintain the spirit of international competition while remaining fully compliant with UK law, specifically the Equality Act. Our goal is to protect the rights of all our members and ensure that British Wrestling remains an inclusive environment where everyone belongs.
While we recognise the handshake as a traditional sign of respect, we also understand that for some members of our community, a physical handshake with a member of the opposite sex may conflict with religious observances.
To ensure we do not practice indirect discrimination, we are moving forward with a domestic position that prioritises mutual respect over any specific physical gesture.
A mark of respect remains mandatory at the start and end of every bout. While the handshake is the preferred gesture where possible, British Wrestling formally recognises the following non-contact alternatives as equivalent marks of respect:
A respectful bow.
Placing a hand over the heart.
A prayer-like gesture.
Athletes and coaches using these gestures do not need to provide a verbal explanation, provided the gesture is offered clearly at the necessary moment.
Domestic referees are instructed not to disqualify wrestlers who decline a handshake on these grounds, provided an approved alternative gesture is offered. In these instances, the referee will award the decision by raising their own arm of the appropriate colour rather than raising the athlete’s arm.
Note for International Competitors: This is a domestic policy only. Athletes competing abroad should be aware that international federations may still strictly enforce physical handshakes.
This pragmatic approach is rooted in our 2025-2030 Strategy, “Unleashing Potential,” and our core values of Inclusivity, Integrity, and Bravery. We encourage our entire wrestling family to implement these guidelines with respect and to continue fostering a supportive environment for all participants.
By making these courageous decisions, we protect our members’ rights and build a more unified community across the UK.
