On Friday 16th December, Sport England announced their funding intentions for the 2017-21 sports’ cycle. British Wrestling was amongst 26 sports in the announcement to receive funding.
A further announcement will be made on the funding available to the remaining sports after Sport England’s February 2017 Board meeting.
This February announcement will also contain the decision on any additional Wrestling funding required to send an England Wrestling Team to the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April 2018.
“The announcement of an increase of 8% in the funding for grassroots Wrestling over the next cycle, in these times of significant financial constraint, is an endorsement of the hard work of many volunteers over many previous years that have got the sport to this point,” said Colin Nicholson, Chief Executive.
“The UK Coaching Certificates, Talent Pathway and Athlete Awards are unarguable as foundations from which to work forward and Sport England clearly understand and support these.”
The increase in funding was possible as a result of close alignment of British Wrestling’s strategic intent (in the areas of Talent Development and supporting sport’s core market,) with both the Government’s new sports strategy “Sporting Future: A New Strategy for an Active Nation” and Sport England’s strategy “Towards an Active Nation.”
British Wrestling would like to thank the National Lottery for making significant funds available for sport that will enable Wrestling and other sports to build on the the progress that the sports have made to date.
