Here at British Wrestling, we’re committed to fostering a safe, fair, and competitive environment for all our athletes, particularly our younger wrestlers. A cornerstone of this commitment is our “10% Pairing Rule,” designed to promote healthy competition and, crucially, to safeguard the well-being of our athletes by discouraging weight cutting.
Simply put, the 10% Rule dictates that all wrestlers within a specific age category will be paired with other wrestlers weighing within 10% of the lightest wrestler in their group. Weights are calculated in kilograms to one decimal place, based on official weigh-in figures.
The primary aim of this rule is to eliminate any performance advantage gained through drastic weight cutting. By removing fixed body weight classes, we remove the incentive for young people to engage in potentially harmful weight management practices.
We understand the importance of maximising competitive opportunities for our wrestlers. Therefore, if a wrestler faces a walkover situation after the initial 10% rule implementation, they will be offered the chance to step up in either a weight OR age category. This ensures more valuable mat time and a more engaging experience for everyone.
However, the safety and well-being of our younger athletes remain paramount. For wrestlers in the Under 17 (U17) age group and below, the Lead Pairer must gain the explicit approval of a British Wrestling Licensed Level 2 Coach, acting in loco parentis, before any such move can occur. This vital safeguard ensures that any decision to move a young wrestler is made with their best interests at heart.
The 10% rule was partially introduced to abate the practice of weight cutting, especially in young people, as well as ensuring more competitive opportunities for all. The British Wrestling Sports Technical Committee met in March 2025 and discussed at length the reintroduction of fixed weight categories at younger age groups. After careful consideration, there was a very clear consensus that there is no appetite for this until we see a greater understanding and better behaviours around weight management across the sport.
To support this, we are actively developing educational modules for wrestlers, coaches, and parents, which we anticipate rolling out in the near future. These resources will provide invaluable guidance on healthy weight management practices and overall athlete well-being.
In the spirit of complete transparency, British Wrestling is publishing the full pairing data from two of our 2025 flagship events, the English Junior Championships and the Kixy British Wrestling Championships.
This data will allow our wrestling community to see precisely how the 10% pairing rule was applied and how the brackets were created. We believe this openness fosters trust and allows everyone to better understand the process involved in ensuring fair and competitive match-ups.
We remain dedicated to nurturing the next generation of British wrestlers, ensuring their development is healthy, enjoyable, and ultimately, successful. If you have any questions about the 10% pairing rule or any other aspect of British Wrestling, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
