Wrestlers from the North West Talent Project put in an extra shift at the weekend and set about doing a spot of volunteering with the DESTINED (Special Needs) Judo Club from Londonderry.
On Sunday, they travelled with the club by minibus to the Irish Open Judo Championships, Dublin and helped the judoka to prepare for their first ever event.
It was a truly exceptional occasion.
Said Joel Hazlett, a young wrestler from the Waterside Sharks Takedown Club, “Today has been a big success and I’m really impressed with the bravery that the special needs athletes show, they love their judo and always have a smile on their face”
The DESTINED (Special Needs) Judo Club is coached by Jim Toland, who is also currently being supported by Sport NI through the North West Talent Project and working towards his own Level 2 UKCC wrestling qualification
