What Does Wrestling Mean to You?
Your wrestling journey is unique to you. After all the time and commitment you give to the sport, what does it actually mean to you?
We put that question to National Development Coach Ross Connelly, and his answer shows how a lifelong connection to wrestling can grow and change over the years.
Born into the sport
Ross has been involved in wrestling since he was five years old. His Dad wrestled before him, so the sport has been part of his life for as long as he can remember. Perhaps unsurprisingly, he finds it hard to sum up in a few words.
“It is really difficult to put into words,” Ross says. “I have been involved in the sport from five years old, my Dad wrestled before me. It is just something that I genuinely love, but I also truly love what I am able to do now, supporting athletes that are now in the position where I was maybe 10 or 12 years ago.”
From athlete to coach
Ross’s answer shows that what wrestling gives you can shift as you move through the sport. The love of wrestling itself stays, but the reward changes. For Ross, it now comes from supporting the next generation of athletes, who are standing where he once stood.
